Shale GasShale gas is natural gas produced from shale rock which is rich in organic carbon. As impermeable as concrete, shale is the earth's most common sedimentary rock. Resembling a chalkboard slate, the clay-sized particles contain oil and natural gas that have been created over millions of years through the breakdown of organic matter left in the rock.

TechnologyDue to its impermeability, shale gas is not easily extracted. As such, the key to success in these resource plays is the application of cost effective state of the art technology. This technology has now been developed and refined and through processes, such as horizontal drilling, multi stage fracturing (“fraccing”) and micro seismic monitoring, extraction of natural gas from shale has become economical.
